Major Redesigns 2005
Kingston Heath sits in the heart of Melbourne's famous Sandbelt, long held among the top echelon in Australia and inside the world's top 20. As consulting architects we work to restore and protect the original design intent that made it great, from the spare 19th hole to The Furrows, the new nine-hole short course opened in 2023. The course will host the 2028 Presidents Cup.
Kingston Heath, located in the heart of the famous Sandbelt of Melbourne, has long held a place amongst the top echelon of golf courses in Australia and is firmly entrenched within the top 20 in the world.
Laid out on a relatively small and flat piece of land, the course makes use of clever routing and superb green sites flanked by iconic Sandbelt bunkers that dictate the strategy of each hole. Over the passage of time golf courses continue to evolve, and a course can deviate quite significantly from the original intent of its architect.
As consulting architects for the club, our work at Kingston Heath has focussed on restoring and maintaining the original design intent that made it great. Our role also extended to the creation of the spare hole, referred to as the 19th, which opened for play in 2018.
Built on a long thin strip of land adjacent to the 12th hole, the new nine-hole short course is designed to replicate the same types of approach shots the Sandbelt is known for, including the same style of greens and bunkers. The holes measure anywhere between 70 and 130 metres and, rather than using formal tees, we created expansive areas of short grass that let golfers play from a variety of locations, both for variety and to help spread the wear. Construction commenced in late 2021 and The Furrows officially opened in April 2023.
Kingston Heath has been chosen as the site of the 2028 Presidents Cup, and we have been working closely with the PGA Tour and the club on a number of minor changes in preparation for the event.
