Major Redesigns 2022–2025
A staged reconstruction of a fine 1920s Perth course, with sandbelt-style greens and bunkers built using a unique edging method. Reopened in 2025 to rave reviews.
Mount Lawley was built in the late 1920s, the peak of golf course design in this country, when so many of the great clubs on the east coast were also formed. The gently rolling terrain and sandy ground are perfect for golf, and the routing is first class, making good use of the undulations and helping to create plenty of fun, sporty holes. The indigenous vegetation retains the feel of the land long before the course was built, the sand base makes for good drainage and easy construction, and the natural undulations form good holes and interesting shots. Had Perth been the centre of Dr Alister Mackenzie's attention during his 1926 Australian trip, rather than the cities of the eastern states, it might well have the most highly regarded courses in the country.
In 2022 we started construction on the main course, completing the work over three stages: four holes in year one, eight in year two and six in year three, along with the practice putting greens, driving range and another short game facility. The course opened for play in early 2025 and has received rave reviews. Greens and bunkers have been built in a sandbelt style, and we devised a unique construction method where the two meet, in order to run the putting surface to the edge of the bunkers and create the sharp edges that were previously only possible closer to Melbourne.
