Major Redesigns 2020

A masterplan to recapture the sandbelt roots of a Sam Berriman course, with staged reconstruction underway since 2023.

Southern Golf Club was built in the late 1940s by Sam Berriman, a prolific designer in the 1940s and 50s around Melbourne, responsible for many well-known courses such as Cranbourne, Keysborough and, for the most part, Huntingdale. For the first 30 years of its life the course played across Lower Dandenong Road, nine holes on one side and nine on the other. But as the road went from a quiet dirt track to a four-lane major road, the course had to be altered, so land was purchased further to the south in the late 1970s and new holes were built so that all 18 were on the same parcel of land.

In 2020 the club engaged OCM to commence a Masterplan aimed at improving the design and recapturing its sandbelt roots. Work commenced in 2023 with the reconstruction of the 3rd and 4th holes and is expected to continue into other parts of the course each year over the next decade.
